Rock Pools by skraww Rock Pools by skraww
I haven't painted anything with a serious background in a while, so this was fun to do.

I've got a cold from all the freezing weather we've had, so I wanted to paint something warm to make up for it :X

The scene was inspired by some photographs that I took at Whitby a couple of years ago.

Paint tool SAI.
One layer.
Five hours-ish.

Comments and Critiques welcome :)

This is beautiful... I wish I could paint backgrounds like this!

Aww, thank you! ^_^
Backgrounds are fun to learn! Starting with reference photos helps a lot, I have a huge folder of scenery on my hard-drive that I go to for inspiration :>

That's really amazingly beautiful.
Awesome work : )
I hope I can somehow get this good at digital painting one day...

It reminded me of Robin Hood's Bay when I saw the thumb, so I wasn't too far off! :)

It's a nice painting, love the little shellfish (barnacle things? <geography GSCE and can't remember anything about seasides)

Thanks! You're good and guessing the locations I have in mind! First the north york moors and now this one!
Those little shell things are limpets XD (I only remember this because back in school one attached itself to a desk while we were studying them).

This is very, very nice! The details on the rocks are gorgeous :) The lighting is just perfect, too.
I think the sky, water and sandy area are missing something. Maybe more detail or a more obvious light source? I don't really know, sorry  (Just tryin' to help!)
I hope you do more of these though! They're great to see!

I think you're definitely right about the sand. In one of the photo references I used the sand looked just like this, flat with no textures. It looked right on the photo, but on the painting something seemed... missing. I think maybe I should have had something to show depth and distance in there, like markings from the tide and footprints perhaps :hmm:
I probably will do more of these, backgrounds/landscapes are something I've neglected quite badly.

Yeah, that's the problem sometimes with reference pictures  You have to use your creative license to change things to make it look right :)
I'd love to see them! I've been trying to practice too, maybe your stuff will inspire me :XD:
