Hey everyone! Lately I've gotten a lot of questions that could be easily and quickly answered by a frequently asked questions page, so here we are! I hope this is helpful!

Q. What software/hardware do you use?

A. I use a Wacom Intuos with Adobe Photoshop.

Q. What brushes do you use?

A. I primarily use Shaddy Safadi's brushes, which can be found here, but I also use a few brushes from Jeremy Paillotin's set, here: here.

Q. Are you open for commissions?

A. Yup, send me an email at info@helennorcott.co.uk and we'll discuss your requirements and pricing!

Q. Can I use your art as a background for my Youtube video?

A. Generally yes, but please contact me first at info@helennorcott.co.uk to discuss it. As long as you won't be using the artwork for anything else, I am generally fine with my work being used as a Youtube video background, as long as you credit me as Helen Norcott / Skraww, and link back to my DeviantART page, my Artstation page: www.artstation.com/artist/skra… and my Facebook page: www.facebook.com/artofhelennor…

Q. Can I buy the rights to an image in your gallery?

A. None of the paintings in my gallery are for sale. You can, however, commission me to create a bespoke image for you, which you can then use however you wish as naturally the rights are all yours. If you have a favourite image of mine, I can create something with a similar mood and feel for you. Contact me to discuss commission pricing and options!

Q. Can I use your artwork in my project?

A. Generally no, I do not wish to have my artwork used in any way, however if you wish to feature my images alongside a piece of writing/article with full written credits and links to my social media, I usually accept as long as you contact me first. However, I do not allow for my artwork to be used in any way which would mean it is distributed to others (i.e. as part of a download, or printed, etc), so please take this into account. My artwork is not for use as stock in any way, not as backgrounds, nor used in photo-manipulations, etc. Please contact me if you wish to discuss anything!

Q. Do you use references?

A. I believe everyone should use reference to gain a greater understanding of the world around them and how to paint it. So even if a painting of mine is completely from imagination, I still have more of an understanding of how rocks work because I have done photo studies of rocks previously. It's the same for any element of a painting - want to paint better trees? Look a tons of resources of trees! Studying from photos and real life are a huge help as they expand your visual library of the world around you, which you can then call upon when you need to paint something imaginary.
I also like to use reference to give me ideas. I have lost count of how many photos I've taken, or how many stock images I have saved in my library. If I have no idea what to paint, I can often browse through these folders and be inspired by even the smallest thing. For example, the colours of a flower in one photo might inspire me to use similar colours in a sunset painting, and so on. Surround yourself with as much good reference material as possible!

Hey Helen, love your sketch a day stuff. I'm currently trying to do a sketch a day too but not quite as spectacular as yours. Brilliant.
